Chapter Twenty

“He’s still not back yet?” Marius asked. Adair rolled his eyes. Did Marius honestly think he’d be sorting laundry if his mate was in the area?

“I don’t know that he’s coming back,” he said, angrily searching through the basket of clothes. Why was it he could only ever find one sock, and who was the idiot that even wore socks? It wasn’t common shifter clothing. It was probably frigging Wesley. Guy should do his own laundry.

“Stop wrecking the clothes,” Marius said, whisking the basket to one side and pushing Adair towards the couch. “Talk to me. Tell me what’s going on.”

Adair sat but the last thing he wanted was to tell his brother the epic mistake he’d made. “Has there been any word from Kane and the others?” He asked instead.

“Kane calls every day. I think Griff’s getting a bit pissed off the guys have been gone so long. It seems Scott saved himself, but there’re no leads on Madison. Scott reported the guy who took them is a real psycho. Like serious serial killer mentality. Apparently Madison told Scott to go and get help, but you know what Scott’s like. He feels like shit for leaving Madison, so they’re all working around the clock to track this wacko down. They should be back in a few days though, which will be good; with new pack members as well from the sounds of things.”

That’ll be good for Griff and Diablo, Adair thought, but worrying about his Alpha wasn’t on top of his list of priorities. Not with his mate still missing. “What about Pelham?” He asked. “Is that idiot still maintaining he wants to challenge Kane when he returns?”

“Yep, in fact he seems more determined than ever. You’d think if he did get super powers from Roland, they’d have worn off by now.” Marius sprawled in his chair, staring at the ceiling. “Have you ever thought about it? Challenging an alpha for a pack, I mean?”

“No,” Adair said more sharply than he intended. “Looking after you two was enough for me. Why? Don’t tell me you’re considering it?” Marius was a decent man, a hard fighter, but he had threads of insecurity that ran deep and that’d always worried Adair.

Marius shook his head. “Nah. I’ve seen enough watching the shit Kane goes through, and now Griff. I just want to find my mate, settle down somewhere quiet. Maybe run a ranch or something.”

“A ranch would be nice,” Adair said, ignoring the pang at the thought that Marius would leave him and Teilo and forge a life for himself somewhere. It was the sort of life he should be pleased his brother was considering. They’d seen too much blood, death and destruction in their lives as it was.

“Yeah, well, it’s not likely to happen any time soon,” Marius said. “And speaking of mates, where’s yours and how the hell did you fuck things up this time? You’re going to get pretty sick if he doesn’t come back soon.”
